Mold Removal in Cambridge, From Alewife to the Charles

Almost half the homes in Cambridge were finished before 1940, so the water behind a musty smell is usually hiding inside plaster, wood lath and a rubble-stone cellar wall. An assessment tells you where it is getting in, what has to come out, and which city approvals stand in front of the work.

Four quick questions, then your details. It takes about twenty seconds.

Question 1What are you dealing with?
Question 2Is anything still wet?

Massachusetts gives an owner 48 hours to get wet surfaces dry after a leak, and the EPA puts mold growth in the same window, so this answer sets the pace of everything else.

Question 3What is your position at the property?

Most homes in Cambridge are rented, and who holds the duty to fix dampness changes who we talk to and what has to be written down.

Question 4How soon do you want someone out?
Who you are, and which building

Who should we ask for?

How can we reach you?

We call to confirm the details before anyone is sent out.

Where is the property?

The contractor match is by property, not by person, so the street line matters.

Anything else we should know?

Which Cambridge office signs off before anything is opened up

Cambridge Inspectional Services issues the building permit, and it has to be in hand and posted on site before the first cut into wet plaster or framing. Three more approvals sit behind it: plumbing, gas and wiring permits go only to Massachusetts licensed trades, asbestos removal needs a city permit on top of the MassDEP notification, and nothing over 50 years old can be demolished without Cambridge Historical Commission approval, which in a city where 67.9 percent of the housing predates 1980 covers most of it. If the property is rented, Cambridge is one of only three cities MGL c.111 s.127L names, so a violation that may impair a tenant's health is attested by the commissioner of housing inspection rather than a board of health, and the city's housing division has four inspectors by area on 617-349-6100. Never pull the permit yourself to save a day: under MGL c.142A that forfeits the Guaranty Fund, which reaches only owner-occupied buildings of one to four units in the first place.

Why being outside the Cambridge flood zone proves nothing

FEMA's NFIP claims dataset records 15 flood insurance claims for the City of Cambridge with loss years from 2010 to 2025 and about $107,000 in net building and contents payments. Thirteen of the 15 were rated in flood zone X, outside the mapped high-risk flood zone, and nine of the 15 were caused by accumulation of rainfall or snowmelt rather than by any river or tidal overflow.

The Cambridge assessment concludes that the Charles River and Alewife basins have different flood mechanisms: flooding in the Alewife basin is mostly driven by overbank flooding, while on the Charles side the city is not expected to see major overbank flooding at the 1 percent probability in 2070 and the inland flooding instead comes from a flood wave propagating through piped infrastructure.
