What one nor'easter did to Medford's finished basements
FEMA's NFIP claims dataset records nine flood insurance claims for the City of Medford with loss years from 2001 to 2021 and about $70,000 in net payments. Four of the nine came from the March 2010 nor'easter and five of the nine were rated in flood zone AE. Eight of the nine were on properties with a finished basement or enclosure.

The Alewife Brook release states that only one treated combined sewer overflow discharge remains to the Upper Mystic River, from the MWRA Somerville Marginal CSO facility, outfall MWR205A/SOM007A, located about half a mile upstream of the Amelia Earhart Dam just below the Route 28 bridge, and that state bacterial standards for the Upper Mystic are typically missed only during and after large storm events.

Medford has 48.8 percent of its housing units built in 1939 or earlier and a median year of construction of 1942, with 75.9 percent built before 1980. 34.2 percent of its units sit in two, three and four unit structures and 33.8 percent are single-family detached.

The same release states that because of increased health risks, public health officials recommend avoiding contact with the Alewife Brook and Upper Mystic River Basin during rain events and for a period of 48 hours following rainfall, and that contact with floodwaters should also be avoided.
